The recent post about a lingering hummingbird leads to the
following treasury of yard bird sightings. For the last four rain/snow/squall
days at least three hummingbirds have careered around our feeders and sampled
the remaining flowers (Russian sage and Agastache). Cornell's FeederWatch would
say three, because we've seen no more than three at a time, but it seems likely
that the group has more members. In previous years, we've seen them into
October, the latest, Oct. 8, 2008.

For the same four days, an immature male Black-headed Grosbeak has
sampled the millet and chipped sunflower seeds. The latest previous one showed
up on Sept. 10, 2008.

Other lingerers: a couple of Lesser Goldfinches, Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers, and a House Wren today, Sept. 24. And, today, a Turkey Vulture
soared circles over the house. We have October records for all of those.
