Hello, Birders.

Andrew and I stopped by various Boulder County reservoirs yesterday, Saturday,
October 11th. Here's what we found:

Panama Reservoir. 10 Northern Pintails, 15 Lesser Scaup, 15 Ruddy Ducks, 40
Sandhill Cranes, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 20 Baird's Sandpipers, 139 Long-billed
Dowitchers, 40 Franklin's Gulls, 1 Swamp Sparrow.

Lagerman Reservoir. 12 Ruddy Ducks, 14 Eared Grebes, 1 Black-bellied Plover, 1
Forster's Tern, 1 American Pipit.

Jim Hamm Reservoir. 6 Lesser Scaup, 2 Snow Geese, 1 Great Egret.

McIntosh Lake. 12 Common Mergansers, 10 Ruddy Ducks, 4 Great Egrets, 28
Long-billed Dowitchers, 1 American Pipit.

Boulder Reservoir. 2 Northern Pintails, 4 Lesser Scaup, 25 Ruddy Ducks, 70
Eared Grebes, 1 Horned Grebe, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 14 Baird's Sandpipers, 1
Sabine's Gull, 5 Franklin's Gulls, 1 Say's Phoebe, 34 Mountain Bluebirds, 21
American Pipits, 2 Audubon's Warblers.

Six Mile Reservoir. 2 Baird's Sandpipers.

Valmont Reservoir. 9 American Avocets.

Baseline Reservoir. 2 Buffleheads, 1 Common Merganser, 12 Ruddy Ducks, 15 Eared
Grebes, 1 Bald Eagle, 1 Ferruginous Hawk.

Lafayette Water Treatment Plant. 2 American Pipits.

Little Gaynor Lake. 28 Lesser Scaup, 1 Bufflehead.

Two thoughts:

1. I think birding "phenomena" are so cool. Give me a phenomenon to a rarity,
any day. As Walter Szeliga noted, this past weekend's phenomenon seems to have
been Long-billed Dowitchers and Baird's Sandpiper. I would add Black-bellied
Plover to that list, with reports from Park County, Jefferson County, Boulder
County (2 sites), Larimer County (14 birds at 1 site), Arapahoe County, Weld
County (3 birds at 1 site), and probably others I've lost track of.

2. Short-billed Dowitchers. I am emphatically *not* dissing any of the recent
reports!! But I'm also saying it's interesting that we're getting this species
as late as the 2nd weekend of October. Short-billed Dowitchers are very early
fall migrants, with most adults moving through mid-continent July-August and
juveniles August-September. So these October reports, presumably all juveniles,
are noteworthy.
