Several reports of recent October Short-billed Dowitchers on COBIRDS are
interesting. I'd like to know their plumages(juvenile, winter, etc.)

Yesterday there were 6 dowitchers at Lake Beckwith, Colorado City, SW Pueblo
County. All were in winter adult plumage. One was smaller with noticeably
shorter bill, whitish tail with obscure horizontal dark stripes, pale flanks
with obscure vertical barring, mottled grayish breast. These field marks
suggest Sb Dowitcher.

The problem is that I remember reading somewhere that Sb Dowitchers do not molt
in migration but on their wintering grounds. But I also know that molt timings
do not always follow a well defined schedule. So fellow birders--it's a good
idea to report plumage types, especially on tough IDs like dowitchers.
