On our eighth The Big Sit! 2009 (conducted on the roof of our house) we
recorded 613 birds of 35 species. Plus, we regret to say, three species that
Urling and Harriet Stratton saw on their walk but which they couldn't induce to
fly into my line of sight from our roof. An average number

We had a pleasant time, with visits from Tom Parchman, who manned the roof for
over two hours and walked the pond down below; Arlene & Gerry Raskin, Pat
Phagan, and Harriett. Not to mention their contributions to our larder.

The list included all of our regular callers, plus a few others. It shows that
if you really stay out there all day you can see stuff you would otherwise
miss. The bluebirds displayed themselves spectacularly. The cranes seem to
stick to Elbert County (two miles plus to the east) -- we could barely see
them. Robins have started to flock, as they did last year.

Surprises: 8 Cedar Waxwings, a Northern Harrier, and 3 Common Grackles --
silent as they fed on cones on a yard-Douglas fir. Urling and Harriett saw a
small contingent of the Northern Bobwhite covey that visited the yard late
Saturday afternoon but not Sunday. This covey showed up two weeks ago - could
they be wild? At least they act wary.
