The last post prompted me to mention the great number of Corvid fledglings
we had up here on our mountain near Conifer this summer. This is the second
summer that a pair of Crows has come back to nest, last year their one baby
spent his summer fussing and whining at his parents on the pine tree at the
peanut feeder in our front yard. They joined a large flock and finally left
in the fall, but early this spring they were all back. They fledged two, and
again, very loud baby crows who fussed all summer, and now that it is fall
they are flying again with a much larger flock. But they have all stayed
around so far this fall; we often have 25 crows swooping through the trees
and feeding at the peanut feeder. A wild bunch!

A family of magpies also fledged 1 beautiful, curious, brazen, smart magpie
who now flies with the same flock of crows. At nesting time the crows tried
to drive the magpie family away but were not successful and all the
fledglings hung around together when they were first out of their nests, and
on and off the rest of the summer. The 2 crows and 1 magpie were quiet a
group, but now with their 25 friends they are really quite a group!

The Stellar Jays fledged two young who also fussed all summer at the peanut
feeder but they don't socialize with the crows quite as readily. We
generally have a consistent group of about 10 - 15 Stellar Jays year- round.

It has felt like we were living in a Corvid nursery all summer! Such
different personalities!
