Hi:

3:50 Saturday afternoon at the west end of Warren Lake, Fort Collins, access
from end of Sprindrift drive there was a large dark mantled gull.

I viewed a dark-backed gull, standing amongst a flock comprising of Ring-bills,
California, Herring Gull. The gull was darker mantled than an adjacent adult
California. There was a strong contrast of tertial tips with mantle. Legs were
pale pink, and the eye was palish. I assume this was the same gull that was
seen earlier this week.

Many of the above mentioned features seemed suggestive for an adult Western
Gull, except I felt the bill lacked the heft, the depth and particularly
prominent gonydeal angle I associate with a typical Western. There is probably
a good chance this gull has a high degree of Western genes in it.

Of course I didn't have a camera, which would have been very helpful in
depicting the bill shape.

Hope someone else with a camera and can get a definitive picture of it.
