Hi,

Thanks to the 20 of you who responded. Here's what I learned:

Almost no-one puts their scope in checked baggage for fear of theft.
Most people don't have a case for the scope. They just wrap clothing around
it for protection. Most people do not have a case (soft or hard-sided) for
their scope; they just wrap it in clothing. (One person did recommend a
soft-sided case made by Victorinox, the Swiss Army Knife company).
Most people take their scope out of their carry-on or backpack as they go
through security because they usually have to anyone (it looks too much like
a bomb on x-ray).
If a flight attendant wants to gate-check your bag that has the scope in,
tell him/her about the fragile optics inside; the hope being that they will
put it in their closet at the front of the plane instead.

While several people said they don't try to take a tripod on board, putting
it in their checked luggage, several others do carry them on board, usually
inside of a carry-on bag, duffel-bag or backpack.
Tripods usually fit in 22" bags, with or without the head being taken off.
One person stated that a tripod with spikes on the end of the legs would not
be allowed to be carried on.

Thanks to all who responded.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Paul Barrett
