Cobirders,

The hidden feeding station along the Purgatoire River near Las Animas
continues to amaze. On 12/4, there were two Northern Cardinals
(obviously paired), two red Fox Sparrows, and two or more White-throated
Sparrows. I sporadically hear a Carolina Wren in the same area. I will
show interested birders the location, which is very difficult to access.
It helps hugely to put feed out in advance of visits.

The cold weather the past few days have changed water conditions. Lake
Hasty flash-froze last night. My consolation there today was getting a
close look at two bobcats as they ran across the frozen lake. John
Martin Reservoir was about 30 percent frozen today. The number of birds
is simply amazing. The number of White Geese (Snow and Ross') is
probably around 30,000. There are thousands of diving ducks and gulls.
Today, there were 10 American White Pelicans in the center of the lake.
Close viewing is problematic if the flocks are well west of the dam and
inside the waterfowl closure area.

Below the dam, I had a Winter Wren (eastern) near where the (frozen)
stilling basin flows into the (mostly frozen) Arkansas River (which is
really only a trickle this time of year).
