COBirders,
Rich Miller and I heard, but never saw, the wintering Tunnel Drive
Golden-crowned Sparrow. The last time I heard one sing was on the north side
of Jade Mountain, Alaska, about 30 years ago. It sang its loud and clear three
note song on four separate occasions. Also present were a few close
Rufous-crowned Sparrows previously reported (resident).
Over at Centennial Park a very cooperative and previously reported
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker posed for photographs on deciduous trees. I found
zero sapsuckers at the Abbey.
Later, I joined Brandon and Margie Joy for prolonged close views of the Pueblo
Res. swan from the Juniper Breaks area (Pueblo).
Unfortunately, I arrived two minutes too late to view the 10 Tundra Swans (I.D.
by voice) that had recently departed, heading south from Big Johnson Reservoir
(El Paso). The reservoir is mostly frozen except for the inlet area. A few
local birders (LE), alerted to the Big J swans, left 50 % off sales at local
malls in favor of a chance to see the rarely seen (in El Paso County) swans.
