Ken Ecton, Joe Mammoser, and I walked Grandview Cemetery for over an hour this
morning between 7:45 and 9a. We did NOT see the female White-winged Crossbill,
but did see a group of 5-6 crossbills flying, some, if not all of which, were
Reds. We later saw a separate pair of Reds with several siskins. Also of note
was the "taiga" Merlin (adult female?) that has been present since early
December eating a freshly-killed European Starling atop an American Elm branch
(photos obtained). An American Kestrel was also seen. When we first saw the
kestrel it was within 20-30 feet of the merlin in the next tree. Not sure if
prey stealing, envy, admiration, falcon chat, rivalry, or what was going on
with this incident.
