I don't have all the tally sheets yet but here's the highlights of our
Sterling Count. First a big thanks to the seven hardy souls who traveled
from all directions to help with the Count. The preliminary number for
total species is 63 which is about average. The most unusual bird was a
Spotted Towhee; this was a first for this count circle. Bill Kaempfer and
Andy Cowell refound this bird in the same place where they had found it on
their scouting run on Saturday. For the second year in a row (and only the
second time in the count circle) we had a Barrow's Goldeneye (at the sewage
ponds) and a Brown-headed Cowbird.

The warm weather made the feeders less productive this year but it was a
fabulous day for raptors. For the second year in a row it looks like we
will set a Count Circle high for Red-tailed Hawk, Ferruginous Hawk and
Rough-legged hawk.
