Hi Cobirders,

This morning there was a smalll female American White Pelican beside the
male that has been here, on a sand spit jutting out into the
lake, alone, often without the company of gulls or ducks ususally here, for
several weeks. During the recent seige of snow and low temperatures some of
you who watched him from the beach were concerned that he would survive,
especially as the rim of open water around the spit was freezing over like
the rest of the lake. Today, the ice around the spit is melting and the
birds are active. After they preened together on the shore and spread their
wings in unison several times, they waddled across the shallows into the
water, and swam to a deep place where they simultaneously probed it with
their bills. The pelicans did not find food there, but possibly they were
continuing their search as they glided further out onto the lake about the
same time we left the beach. How this pair will survive the winter is as
mysterious to us as their meeting.
