As Walter promised, I am making available some "witnes-quality" photos of the
sub-adult California Gull, at http://www.pbase.com/quetzal/cagu12262009. I am
sure others acquired much better photos. I have not had time to prepare an
explanation as to why the photos depict a California Gull and not a vagrant
Black-tailed Gull, but consultation with most field guides should be
sufficient. Thanks to Walter for focussing attention on this interesting
plumage of California Gull, and to the great gull-viewing opportunity at Thomas
Reservoir (and to Ted Floyd for pointing out the gull-viewing opportunities at
Erie Reservoir and Valmont Reservoir). I hope to post photos of some other
interesting gulls there in the next day or two.
