January 2010 Field Trips

Saturday, January 9           South Platte Park – Carson Nature Center 
Leader: Ed Holub 303-979-2194. Meet at 0800 at Nature Center parking lot, 
(north of Mineral Avenue, 1 bock west of Santa Fe Drive, behind Aspen Grove 
shopping center). Raptors and waterfowl plus winter visitors and permanent 
residents at the Center's feeders.

nuary Field Trips, continued 
Sunday, January 10          Wheatridge Greenbelt 
Leader: Kathanne Lynch, 303-526-0670, cell phone 303-968-4750.   For people 
with other Sunday obligations, we'll meet at 10:30 a.m. at Prospect Lake 
north parking lot. Good picnic tables if you'd like to bring lunch.   To reach 
lake, go south off 44th Avenue in Wheat Ridge between Quail and Robb 
Streets, west of Kipling.   New leader ready to share the area's species with 
you. 



Saturday, January 16        Belmar Historic Park 
Leader: Karleen Schofield, 303-936-8661.  Meet at 0900 at 800 South 
Wadsworth. Turn west on Ohio Avenue from Wadsworth, straight ahead for 2 blocks 
into Irongate parking area next to the lake.  1/2 day trip, easy walking.   
Karleen really knows the area and its wildlife. 


Sunday, January 17          Bear Creek Lake Park and Bear Creek Green Belt 
Leader: Mike Henwood, 303-716-8551.   Meet at 0800 at Park entrance (S.E. 
corner of Morrison Road and C470); $5 fee per vehicle.  1/2 day trip.   Mike 
checks the area regularly so will share his first-hand knowledge with you. 


Saturday, January 23       Rocky Mountain Arsenal
Leader: David Rhoades, 303-424-8633.   Must register with leader for time 
and directions for this popular trip, with limited number of participants. 


Sunday, January 24         Longmont Area 
Leader: Chris Owens, 303 772-6048.   Meet at 0830 at Jim Hamm Nature 
center.   From I-25 take Exit 240. Go west 4 miles on CO 119 to Boulder-Weld CO 
Line Road, then 2 miles north to park on left at East 17th Ave.   Bring lunch 
as trip will end about 1 or 2 p.m. depending on weather and birds.   State 
parks Pass may be needed. 


Saturday, January 30       Cherry Creek State Park 
Leader: Mary Keithler, 303 771-1421.   Meet at 0830 at the marina for 1/2 
day trip, lunch is optional.   Bring scopes for "far-out" waterbirds and 
treetop hawks scanning for prey.   Parks Pass required. 


Sunday, January 31         88th and the Platte River 
Leader: Chishun Kwong and Joanna Chan, 720-304-2073.   Meet at 0900 at 
parking lot at 88th and the Platte River for 1/2 day trip.   Always ducks in 
the 
open water, hopefully Barrow's Goldeneye and Long-tailed Duck.   Scopes 
would be helpful. 


The DFO board is requesting more volunteers to support the field trip
