Dear CObirders-- I must be the only one in the network who has not gone to see the snowy owl, but have enjoyed your discussion and the photos tremendously. I just wanted to add this note of appreciation: I think that this is the first time I've ever seen a series of reminders of birding etiquette on this listserv where someone (often several someones) has not piped up with the perennial excuse: "Flushing this bird is of no particular significance-- it is already out of its normal context, therefore already at risk/probably doomed, and our actions, even with fatal consequences, will have no impact on snowy owls in general... " That perspective has always disgusted me, so I hope my posting here will prevent its being refreshed in this forum!
My feeling is that we should set an example to others, and if others see us behaving callously, the "bad" behaviors will spread, and sometimes, the consequences will not be so harmless. Thanks to all for great attitudes, and happy hunting. Linda Central Bldr Cnty near Haystack
