I received a phone call today from my brother-in-law asking me about the four
birds he was seeing at the intersection of Main St. and 119 in Longmont. They
were taking to the sky from somewhere in the area. He described them as larger
than a Great Blue Heron, pinkish in color and keep describing the bills a
spoonbill or ibis like. He is not a birder, but has been with me enough to
know some birds, especially the large mega-fauna type... I was about 20 minutes
away and searched south of 119 on my way to Longmont from Frederick, but found
nothing mixed in with the 1000s of Canada Geese in the fields. My only guess
would be cranes, but he is familiar with them form the San Luis Valley. Any
ideas?
