This morning (2/26) I took a spin around the Monte Vista NWR and found many Sandhill Cranes present, despite the fact that fields in that area and the rest of the San Luis Valley are still covered with snow. My guestimation for cranes at the NWR today was 2,000 or more, plus several hundred on the wing. (Bear in mind that my counting skills are not the greatest.) Not much open water, but Northern Pintails have already found what little there is. Also on NWR were the usual Canada Geese and Mallards, a Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, small herd of elk, and a porcupine. NWR tour road and pull-outs are in excellent shape, as are main roads, but I advise staying on those. Virginia Simmons, Del Norte
