Starting with Highland Lake (a mile north of Meade) - 3 third year Bald Eagles
soaring and sitting in the trees, a couple of Cal gulls. On Sunday, we watched
an adult Bald Eagle snatch a couple of floaters off the surface and carry them
up to a branch to eat. I suggest that since Union, Ish, Cottonwood and most of
the other local rest stops are short of beaches that Highland Lake may prove to
be a hotbed of shorebirds in a month or so. Today featured the first 3
pelicans of the season, fully decked in breeding finery and looking kinda
skinny.

Up to Lower Latham for a spring check. M&M (mostly mallards, very skittish)
plus a few stray shovelers and canvasbacks and a lone meadowlark. Three
Harriers flying low on the southeast corner, then two of them doing some mating
soaring.
