I went down to the South Mesa Trailhead and birded the Homesead and Towhee
trails for three hours this morning, and my list is posted below. Being
from Louisiana, it's odd to see and hear Yellow-breasted Chat in habitat
like that. Back home, they're really thick in cutover (second-growth pine)
areas. The Lazuli Buntings and Black-headed Grosbeaks were singing like
crazy, and so was the one MacGillivray's. The end of its song sounded so
much like a Kentucky Warbler that it literally stopped me in my tracks.

Good birding,
John Dillon
vacationing from the Louisiana heat
