I was hiking on the hogback east of Red Rocks (where the raptor count
takes place) and heard a bird I would like help identifying. The bird started
singing at dusk and was still calling when we were coming down at 10:30pm
(yep-night hike).
It had a two note call that sounded similer to a wooden flute. The
first sound had a slight descending pitch and the second was higher than the
first. It would call for several minutes, then double the speed of the
call, and then quit for a little while.
One of my friends thought it reminded me of a bobwhite call but it
didn't quite match the call on "I bird". Would a bobwhite call that
persistently and call that late into the night? It didn't sound like an owl to
me
and didn't match any of the owl calls I listened to on the program.
Any ideas? Thanks, Deb Carstensen, Littleton
