I hiked just a bit of the Walker Ranch Loop Trail this morning before the
rain started and had what I'm reasonably sure is a female Eastern race
Purple Finch. The bold white eyestripe and not so bold white malar
stripe/patch stood out to me immediately because I have these as feeder
birds in the winter back home in Louisiana. Neither Cassin's nor House
Finch should have that much white on the face. The undertail coverts also
appeared white without any significant signs of streaking; Cassin's should
have streaking there apparently. I've posted pics of the bird as well as
pics of one of a pair of Rock Wrens near the beginning of the trail to my
Picasa Web Album:

Please note the pics are BAAAAAD! But they should be good enough for
documentation. I couldn't get a signal, so no GPS reading for anyone, but if
anyone would like to know the exact location, just email me off list.

Good birding,
John Dillon
