A few days ago I watched a Black-billed Magpie and juv. Sharp-shinned Hawk interacting. I first saw the sharpie chasing the magpie and expected to see a smack-down and magpie feathers flying. Not so. The chasing would occur in short bursts and then both birds would land on a fence rail several feet apart. The magpie would then move closer to the sharpie until it was just a couple feet away. It then made a move toward the sharpie in an "I dare you to chase me" type of move and off they would go again. At times the magpie would chase the sharpie. Any idea the meaning of this behavior?
