This is not a rare bird in many parts of Colorado, but at times fairly
rare in Boulder County, especially in the high country. (Did the fire
bring it in?) Here is a photo of and map for this bird, found
yesterday, Saturday 9/18/10, at about 10 AM by Gary Matthews. Gary and
I were one of Bill Kaempfer’s scouting parties for this year’s fall
Indian Peaks Bird Count. Bill assigned us to part of the Switzerland
trail, an old railroad right of way as it passes near Ward on the
south side of Grassy Top Mountain. Along this sunny, open valley we
also saw a Green-tailed Towhee, Cooper’s Hawk, Mountain Bluebird,
Chipping Sparrow, American Pipit, White-crowned Sparrow, and American
Goldfinch—but only one of each. The fall color was spectacular!
