Gerry Lewis' Woodpeckers were previous common, easily and reliably found and nesting at Turkey Creek Ranch Kit carson picnic ground until the large dead cottonwood trees that they usually need to nest were all cut down :( Perhaps there are new large dead trees for them to nest? Dave
David Elwonger, who roosts at 8400' near Woodland Park Colorado From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: [cobirds] Lewis Woodpeckers at Turkey Creek Ranch, El Paso County Date: Sun, 19 Sep 2010 15:04:02 -0600 I made a quick stop at Turkey Creek Ranch this morning and saw at least 8 Lewis Woodpeckers in the picnic area alone. My question is: does anyone have any idea why there are so many of these relatively rare for Colorado birds concentrated in this area? I wonder if the large forest fire that occurred on Fort Carson adjacent to the ranch about a year and a half ago has anything to do with it. I welcome any ideas. Besides the many Lewis Woodpeckers, the ranch was otherwise quite birdy: Location: Turkey Creek Ranch Observation date: 9/19/10 Number of species: 11 Lewis' Woodpecker 8 Western Scrub-Jay 12 Black-billed Magpie 1 American Crow 2 Western Bluebird 40 European Starling 20 Yellow-rumped Warbler 2 Wilson's Warbler 1 Chipping Sparrow 10 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 House Finch 6 This report was generated automatically by eBird v2(http://ebird.org) Gary Koehn -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
