As a Northern Colorado birder, some of my favorite birding adventures away from home include visits to Higbee, CO, about 20 miles south of La Junta in Otero County. On Thursday morning, October 7, I had the opportunity to bird the Higbee Road which parallels the lush Purgatoire River valley for several miles on the west side of state highway 109. Habitat along the road is mostly cholla desert, weedy fields, and arid Juniper hillsides. Scenery and birding here is fantastic. Highlights on Thursday morning (with Cole Wild) included resident Wild Turkey (dozens), Canyon Towhee (a couple dozen), Scaled Quail (about a dozen), Greater Roadrunner (3), Ladder-backed Woodpecker (2), and numerous migrating sparrows including some uncommon species - Field Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow.
