We enjoyed our 9th annual The Big Sit! Sunday, with an average number of
species (32) and below average number of individuals (119 -- no cranes this
year).
Highlights came when four Evening Grosbeaks crowded onto a feeder for a couple
of minutes -- and then hightailed it far away. I guess our offerings didn't
impress them much. We saw our first The Big Sit! Bushtit -- one. Only one
Townsend's Solitaire even though the junipers look very satisfying for
solitaires this year. About 9 p.m. we called in a Saw-whet Owl with the IPod,
even though we have heard one only once before this fall. It gave a couple of
those saw-whetty calls, not the repeated hoot. So far, no noise from him
tonight.
We also ate very well, most of the morning through lunch, courtesy of our
guests.
Next year, we encourage you to host a The Big Sit! where you live or bird. We
conduct ours on the (flat) roof of our house. We don't see as many birds as
Joey Kellner does at Chatfield, but we enjoy it at least as much and eat much
better.
