On 10/9/10, while hiking in Chaffee County, I saw a male White-winged Crossbill working the cones on what I believe were Engelmann spruce. The location was Hartenstein Lake (11,500') in the Collegiate range, accessed from the Denny Cr trail off the road to Cottonwood Pass. I got some good views of his sturdy bill, rosy red body and head, and dark grey wings with white bars. He appeared to be solo. I waited around a while after he flew off, hoping he'd return with some friends, but it was blustery up there and I got cold sitting. Great day to be out in a few inches of fresh snow, though!
