Today I found another male Williamson's Sapsucker in Canon City, this one in
a private yard only about a hundred feet from another male Williamson's I
found previously. Both were busy feeding in their respective pine trees
this morning. The closest male Williamson's I had previously found are
located at Rouse Park and I saw both of those feeding in their respective
pines providing support for this guy being a new additional Williamson's. I
have uploaded a pic of this new sapsucker onto my <goog_1979599684>
BirdsAndNature <http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com> blog because it shows
this sapsucker by a gallery of enlarged rectangular sap wells that I have
seen this and other sapsucker species make--they drill additional holes near
the original hole and probe into it causing it to be enlarged and to go from
the more commonly seen round hole to a rectangular hole. It is interesting
that *Birds of North America *online discusses this type of feeding behavior
in it's account for Yellow-bellied but not in the Williamson's account.

I was unable to find the female Williamson's that Doug Kibbe had found in
Rouse Park Saturday but also could not relocate the one I found at McKinley
Elementary School yesterday--since these two locations are only a half mile
apartt, they may well be the same bird. The trees where I saw the female by
the school between the teachers parking lot and the main entrance to the
school so there is a lot of disturbance.

Rich Miller let me know that he found a dead male Williamson's today that he
thought had either been hit by a car or had hit a window as it showed no
sign of being killed by a predator. This bird was by some pines in a
location where I had not found any Williamson's this year (or fresh sap
wells) though I had checked those trees last week as sapsuckers have worked
them in past years. This location is just under a mile from Lakeside
Cemetery it might have been one of the 3 males I found there last Friday
(Rich saw 2 males and 2 females at the cemetery today). With the loss of
this Williamson's I am leaving the total count of Williamson's in Canon City
at 22.
