Early this morning Bob Andrews, Michael Kiessig, Rob Raker and myself
visited the feeders at the Red Rocks Trading Post. The first year
Harris's and the White-throated Sparrows both showed up and provided
excellent looks in the sunlight along the wall in front of the lower
apple tree on the west side. The Golden-crowned Sparrow put in a
brief appearance underneath the platform feeder. We left without
seeing the Curve-billed Thrasher.
After 3 p.m. Bob Andrews and I returned hoping to see the Curve-billed
Thrasher. We ran into Will Burt, who was looking to photograph the
Harris's Sparrow. He indicated the Curve-billed had been there about
10 minutes earlier. Together the three of us watched the Golden-
crowned feed near and underneath the west platform feeder. After we
left Will was able to get some nice photos of the Curve-billed
Thrasher, Golden-crowned and White-throated Sparrows - but no Harris's
Sparrow. During our two stops Bob and I were able to see all three of
the sought after sparrows, but no Curve-billed. Will had good looks
and photos of all but the Harris' Sparrow. Some days you can be lucky
and see all 4 species in a relatively short time, and other days you
spend a lot of time looking and waiting.
The scorecard indicates that all four species were seen during the day
- Curve-billed thrasher, Golden-crowned Sparrow, White-throated
Sparrow, and first year Harris's Sparrow. In addition this morning we
watched two Prairie Falcons soar and glide and harass a Red-tailed
hawk sitting in the top of a pine tree. Enjoyable, but frustrating day.
