Adams County:
--An imm Glaucous Gull was reported by Smart at Barr Lake on December 5.
Bent County:
--A GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL and 1 Thayer's Gull were reported by Duane Nelson
at John Martin on December 6.
Boulder County:
--A Lesser Black-backed Gull was reported by Floyd at McIntosh Reservoir in
Longmont on December 4.
--An ad TUNDRA SWAN was reported by Gent at the Valmont Power Plant on November
25 and was seen again by Nunes on December 5.
--A female/imm Black Scoter was reported by Kaempfer at Baseline Reservoir on
November 28 and was seen again by the Wednesday Roadcreepers on December 8.
--A White-winged Scoter was reported by Frye and the Roadcreepers at Baseline
Reservoir on December 8.
--A Swamp Sparrow was reported by Plage and First Sunday Birders west of the
water treatment plant by Walden Ponds in Boulder on December 5.
--A late American Bittern was reported by Plage in the SW corner of Cottonwood
Marsh on December 5. Hope that it stays for the Christmas Count.
Denver County:
--A BRANT was reported by Pollock on the NW side of the lake behind Lakecrest
at Gateway Apartments, 4699 Kittredge on November 28. On December 4, Smart
reported the BRANT in the same area.
--2 ad Pacific Loons were reported by Tina Jones at Marston Reservoir on
December 7.
Douglas County:
--A female EASTERN TOWHEE was reported by Kingery on November 19 and seen again
on December 3. Directions: From Franktown traffic light go south 3/4 mile to
Russellville Road; left on Russellville 3-4 miles to Tomichi; left on Tomichi
about 1/2 mile to parking lot next to sign for Russellville. Follow trail that
drops to creek.
The Towhee was seen on December 6 by Kirkpatrick.
El Paso County:
--On December 4, Dan Maynard reported the following birds at the north end of
Fountain Creek Regional Park south of the sewage ponds: male PINE WARBLER,
Winter Wren, "red" Fox Sparrow, and Ovenbird. An ad Harris's Sparrow was
reported by Dan Maynard near Rice's Pond on December 4. On December 6, Bill
Maynard found 2 different "winter wrens", the Harris's Sparrow and reported
that Carragher refound the Ovenbird. Lee relocated the PINE WARBLER on
December 6. On December 8, Percival reported the imm Harris's Sparrow and a
Winter Wren at Fountain Creek.
--2 Rusty Blackbirds were reported by Lee at Clear Springs Park which is south
of Fountain on December 5. Directions: Take exit 123 from I-25 and go east.
Percival relocated the Rusty Blackbirds on December 8.
Garfield County:
--2 Long-tailed Ducks were reported by McConnell at Rifle Gap on November 28
and were seen again on December 7 by Filby along with 2 Barrow's Goldeneyes.
Huerfano County:
--A BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was reported by Chartier at Lathrop SP near the dam
at Martin Lake on December 4. On December 5, Nelder reported the BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKE at Martin Lake.
Jefferson County:
--On December 8, Henwood reported that the Curve-billed Thrasher,
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, Harris's Sparrow, and White-throated Sparrow continue
at Red Rocks Trading Post.
Lake County:
--On November 6, Kalbach reported 3 TRUMPETER SWANS at the extreme western end
of Twin Lakes and on November 19, Kalbach reported that a TUNDRA SWAN and
joined the TRUMPETERS. On December 5, Kalbach reported that the swans were
still present.
--2 Black Scoters and Barrow's Goldeneyes were reported by Kalbach at Mt Elbert
Forebay on December 5.
Larimer County:
--At Horseshoe Lake, Komar reported 1 ad Lesser Black-backed Gull and 1 ad m
Barrow's Goldeneye on December 4.
--A 1st-cyc ICELAND GULL was reported by Wild on a small pond on the east side
of Namaqua Road in SE Loveland on December 5.
--An ad Thayer's Gull was reported by Wild at Rist Benson on December 5.
Morgan County:
--At Jackson Lake SP on December 4, Kaempfer reported 1 1-st cycle Thayer's
Gull, 1 ad Lesser Black-backed Gull, and 1 imm/female Long-tailed Duck.
Ouray County:
--3 imm Surf Scoters were reported by Dexter at Ridgway Reservoir on November
22. On December 6, Kent Nelson reported 1 Surf Scoter at Ridgway.
Pueblo County:
--On December 2 and 7, Percival reported a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL at the South
Shore Marina tires of Pueblo Reservoir.
--A Red-necked Grebe was reported by Percival at West Fisherman's Point of
Pueblo Reservoir on December 4.
--On December 6, Lilly reported 1 ad male Long-tailed Duck at the south end of
the dam and 1 possible 1st-cycle Lesser Black-backed Gulls at the South Shore
Marina tires.
--On December 7, Percival reported the ad male Long-tailed Duck was near the
South Shore Marina.
--At Valco Ponds on December 7, Percival reported 1 Winter Wren and 1 Swamp
Sparrow.
Routt County:
--2 Black Scoters were found by Moulton at the west end of Stagecoach Reservoir
on December 7.
Weld County:
--On December 4 at Windsor Reservoir, Wild reported 1 juv BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKE, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (2 ad, 1 1-st cyc), and 1 1-st cycle
Thayer's Gull. Most birds were on the south side of the reservoir.
--At Union Reservoir:
----On December 4, Floyd reported 1 juv BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE and 2 ad f
Long-tailed Ducks. The ducks were in the SW corner. On December 5, Deininger
reported that the BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was still being seen and Nunes
reported 1 young f Long-tailed Duck. Prentice refound the BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKE at Union on December 6.
----On December 4, Deininger reported a TUNDRA SWAN on the west side and a
Lesser Black-backed Gull in the SE corner.
----On December 4, Kaempfer reported a 1-st cycle Thayer's Gull.
The DFO field trip for Saturday, December 11 will be to Fawnbrook Inn and
Northern Foothills led by Mike Serruto (303-377-9870) and Nina Routh
(303-987-8687). Meet the leaders at 0800 on the northwest side of the Wagon
Road Park 'n Ride, 120th Ave at Huron in Westminster (exit 223 from I-25, then
west about 1/2 mile). Will carpool and head north through Lyons into
Allenspark. Plan to have lunch at a small diner in Allenspark or bring your
own if your prefer. Back before dusk. Please notify Mike or Nina if you plan
to attend.
The DFO field trip for Sunday, December 12 has been cancelled.
