Cobirders,

The John Martin Reservoir Christmas Count took place on December 16th. Despite an unfavorable forecast, conditions were perfect for observation, with cool temperatures, light overcast skies, light winds, and temperatures above freezing. The twelve observers found 114 species, breaking the old record of 111 species.

Three new species were added to the count. The lingering Blue Grosbeak provides a first Colorado CBC record of this species. Two Dunlin were observed by eight of the participants. A Pacific Loon was new to the count.

Highlights include (but are not limited to): Greater Scaup, Surf Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Barrow's Goldeneye, four species of grebe, American White Pelican, Virginia Rail, Sora, Greater Roadrunner, Western Screech-Owl, Short-eared Owl, Lewis' Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Rock Wren, Eastern Bluebird, Mountain Bluebird, Northern Mockingbird, Brown Thrasher, Curve-billed Thrasher, American Pipit, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Canyon Towhee, Savannah Sparrow, Lincoln's Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Harris' Sparrow, Fox Sparrow (red), Northern Cardinal, Great-tailed Grackle and Brown-headed Cowbird.

I would like to thank participants that came from far and near to help, despite predictions of snow and bad roads. We couldn't do it without you.
