Hi Jane et al.:

The accipiter in your picture is a Cooper's Hawk, diagnosable as such for a
variety of reasons, among them:

1) eye is small relative to size of head (Sharp-shinned has eyes that dominate
their small heads);

2) tail is long with the outermost rectrices obviously shorter than the rest
(Sharp-shinned typically has all tail feathers virtually the same length); and

3) white tip to tail wide and obvious (Sharp-shinned has a narrower whitish
tail tip).

Because of the skewed ratio of responses getting the correct ID, I sent the
link to Jerry Liguori (author of Hawks From Every Angle) for confirmation of
my thoughts on the beastie and his response was:

"Coop for sure (probably male), long tail with wide white tip, tawny head that
looks large, rufous tips are broad on rump (if that's the rump, doesn't matter
though because the tips are broader all over on coops)."

Respectfully,

I have posted a link to my webpage with a photo of a bird. I think
it's a sharpie but maybe you think it's a coopers. It was taken on
Jackass Hill, Littleton, CO in December of this year.
