The Black Forest CBC tallied 38 species and 1433 individuals, way down from the highest totals of 48 species, 2696 individuals. We observed a notable lack of cones on the ponderosas, which reduced the number of woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, and finches. Horned Larks headed the list of individuals (253) followed by 160 Starlings, 149 Canada Geese, and 102 American Crows.
Examples of reduced conifer birds: 21 Steller's Jays (61 last year); 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches (28); 21 White-breasted (57); 74 Pygmies (201); 0 Cassin's Finches (21); 0 Red Crossbills (93); and 5 Pine Siskins (137). Also, 1 Townsend's Solitaire (4). Several parties searched for Short-eared Owls without success. We had one new bird for the count: fourth from the end of one V of a flock of honking Canada Geese flying over the Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch, we saw One Snow Goose.
