All-

After getting tired of waiting for the Golden-crowned and Harris's
Sparrows to make an appearance at the Red Rocks Trading Post this
morning (they didn't - the other two regulars did), I decided to head
over to the Platte to see what was about.

Near their regular spot near the big turquoise/white tank south of
88th I found four Barrow's Goldeneye - two male and two female.

A bit further south (about a quarter mile) I ran into the Robinettes -
also out birding and they had found a Dunlin actively feeding on a
sand/gravel bar on the east side of the river. This bird was roughly
Killdeer sized, very black legs, long-ish rather heavy black bill,
very slightly drooped. The bird was very flat in tone on its back -
grayish-brown with a grayish wash over its upper breast. A great find
on their part.

Otherwise the river area was well populated with all the expected
dabbler and diving species of duck. I saw one Killdeer and heard at
least one more. One Great Blue Heron flew over the water-treatment
facility located on the west side of the river.

Good birding,

Kathy Mihm Dunning
