Adams County:
--Two Winter Wrens were reported by Kaempfer on the Barr Lake CBC on January 3.
One was by Barr Lake in a drainage ditch on the north side of the dam east of
RMBO headquarters. The other was near the Brighton Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Park on the north side of CO 7 at Platte River Bridge and walk about .5 mile
north to 2nd ditch.
--Four Barrow's Goldeneyes (2m, 2f) were reported by Dunning near the green and
white tank south of 88th and Platte River on January 7.
--A Dunlin was found by Robinette about a 1/4 mile further south of the green
and white tank on a sandbar on the east side of the river on January 7.
Bent County:
--At John Martin on January 3, Leatherman reported 2 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS
(1 ad, 1 1-st cyc), 1 m Barrow's Goldeneye, and a sleeping swan. On January 4,
Leatherman reported 6 TUNDRA SWANS (4a, 2 imm) at John Martin.
--A m Northern Cardinal and red Fox Sparrow were reported by Duane Nelson at
the Purgatoire River Railroad Crossing 2 miles east of Las Animas on January 6.
--Lapland Longspurs were reported by Duane Nelson at the feedlot at CR BB and
15 on January 5.
Boulder County:
--An ad TUNDRA SWAN was reported by Gent at the Valmont Power Plant on November
25 and was seen again by Floyd et al on January 8.
--A Black Scoter was reported by Gent at the Valmont Power Plant on January 1.
--An ad Glaucous Gull was reported by Gent at Prince Lake #1 on January 1.
--A Harris's Sparrow has been visiting the yard of Alex Brown in Boulder. If
birders want to try for the bird, Alex recommends try looking on the east side
of the house over the wooden fence or from the bottom (south two houses west of
where Viele Ditch runs under S. 46th St. The sparrow spends a fair amount of
time in the big pine tree at the bottom of the yard. The address is 4560
Darley Ave (south side of Darley, 2 houses west of S. 46th).
--The imm GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW continues at the Juniper windbreak at the
Teller Farm parking lot as reported by Severs on January 1 and was seen again
on January 8 by Floyd.
--Floyd reported the following on the Valmont field trip on January 8: ad MEW
GULL, 3 ad Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 1 1st-cyc Thayer's Gull.
Chaffee County:
--150 Rosy-Finches with all 3 species were reported by Kalbach in Granite on
January 1.
Delta County:
--A Tundra Swan was reported by Cooper at Confluence Park in Delta on January 3.
--A pair of Barrow's Goldeneyes was reported by Dexter on the Gunnison River
north of Confluence Park near Delta on January 7.
Douglas County:
--A first winter Harris's Sparrow was reported by Henwood on the Douglas County
CBC on January 2 in a cemetery near the intersection of Hwy 105 (North Perry
Park Road) and W Pine Cliff Ave.
Douglas/Jefferson Counties:
--On the Denver CBC on December 18, Kellner reported Thayer's Gull, Glaucous
Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Winter Wren, and Rusty Blackbird at Chatfield
State Park. On December 26, Kellner reported 2 1st-cyc Glaucous Gulls, a f
Long-tailed Duck, and imm Red-necked Grebe. On January 1, Teuton reported a
Lapland Longspur at the Model Airplane Field and Thayer's Gull, Glaucous Gull
and Red-necked Grebe at Chatfield. On January 4, Kilpatrick refound the Winter
Wren at Chatfield.
El Paso County:
--On January 8 on the Fountain Creek Winter Bird Count, Pals reported the
following: Winter Wren, PINE WARBLER, Swamp Sparrow, and Harris's Sparrow.
Jefferson County:
--On January 5, Henwood reported that the Curve-billed Thrasher, Harris's
Sparrow, GOLDEN CROWNED SPARROW, and 1 White-throated Sparrow continued at Red
Rocks and he did not see any Rosy-Finches. On January 5 around 10am, Ed Holub
saw a flock of 75 - 100 Rosy-Finches at Red Rocks. On January 7, Dunning
reported Curve-billed Thrasher and White-throated Sparrow at Red Rocks.
Larimer County:
--A possible PACIFIC WREN was reported by Mammoser by the Environmental
Learning Center in Fort Collins on January 4. The stub-tailed wren was seen
again on January 6 by Leatherman who reports that the wren is proving difficult
to identify. If you assume that the thicket east across the bike trail from
the ELC parking lot outhouse is the center of its range, then the wren wanders
about 50 yards either direction along the river.
Mesa County:
--All 3 species of Rosy-Finches were reported by Dexter east of Gateway along
the highway on January 6.
Moffat County:
--50+ Barrow's Goldeneyes were reported by Luke on the Yampa River at the south
end of Craig on January 8.
Otero County:
--INCA DOVES were reported by Duane Nelson in Rocky Ford near Washington and
Virginia Streets on January 6.
Routt County:
--All 3 species of Rosy-Finches were reported by Luke at the feeders of Glen
and Joann Kelley north of Hayden on January 8. Please call ahead 970-276-3126
to arrange with the Kelleys to see the finches.
The DFO field trip for Sunday, January 9, will be to the Wheatridge Greenbelt
led by Toni Rautus (303-442-7322). Meet at 0900 at Prospect Lake north parking
lot. To reach the lake go south off 44th Ave in Wheatridge between Quail and
Robb Streets. 1/2 day trip. Lunch optional.
