Greg, Any race of Dark-eyed Junco can show white wing-bars, but the rate of occurance varies. It's highest in Slate-colored and Pink-sided, somewhere around 1-2% of sampled individuals. The brightness and extent of the white tips to the median and greater wing coverts varies greatly. It should also be noted that some White-winged Juncos have very reduced or absent wing-bars. As you point out, there are other features (bill size/color, tail pattern, etc.) that can be handy when trying to sort out an pseudo-White-winged.

Not a white-winged... too small, not enough white in the tail, pink bill, but it got me wondering... does anyone know the rough ratio of slate-colored with wing bars, to "normal" plumaged birds? I seem to see barred juncos pretty frequently. Regards -Greg Pasquariello, Littleton, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
