The last two days I have been seeing a large assembly (congress, convention,
parliament?) of Common Ravens (and a few crows) in the lot north of Chez Thuy
Restaurant on 28th Street south of Valmont in Boulder, before 8 AM. It is a
great opportunity to view ravens feeding each other, strutting, pointing their
bills, apparently raising their head feathers, and interacting in a group of
about 30+. It is also a great opportunity to hear a range of vocalizations,
for those practicing their spoken Raven. Does anyone have ideas for what this
kind of gathering is about, if these are single birds looking for mates, or why
they are gathering in larger numbers now than at other times of the year? It is
a nice way to start the day, and certainly more comfortable than sitting high
in a wind-blown tree in below-freezing weather a la Berndt Heinrich, though in
far more urban surroundings.
