Hello Everyone, I am visiting Colorado from April 30-May 8 with a couple other birders. We will be mainly targeting grouse/prairie-chickens and high altitude species (especially owls). We plan on visiting Wray; Elkhart, Kansas; Gunnison; Grand Mesa; Hayden/Craig/Steamboat area; Loveland Pass; Pawnee National Grassland - in that order. If all goes well, we should have a little flexibility at the end of the trip near the Front Range. Here are our main targets, with a few comments next to them. Any up to date information is appreciated. We have both the Falcon and Lane's guides to help. I also realize that we may too early or late for some of these and others are just plain longshots.
Cackling Goose - Any still around? Reservoirs? Dusky Grouse - Good chance at Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP or Hayden White-tailed Ptarmigan - Loveland Pass - strategies? Greater Sage-grouse - active leks near Hayden/Craig Sharp-tailed grouse - active leks near Hayden/Craig Chukar - descending Grand Mesa? Migrating shorebirds - Baird's Sandpiper, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, American Golden Plover Mountain Plover - Pawnee - best sites, or other on route. Short-eared Owl Spotted Owl - longshot, I know.
