Pretty hot and quite windy all day in Southeast Colorado.
Sparrows beginning to show up in numbers: Vesper, Chipping, White-crowned,
Lark, Savannah, Brewer's, and Clay-colored. Few Cassin's in the sand sage. No
Grasshoppers that I've seen but if the wind would ever quit, they are probably
"singing" in appropriate habitats.
On a tip from Duane Nelson of a large group of Whimbrels on the northwest shore
of Nee Noshe Reservoir, a group of us (Jane Stulp, Janeal Thompson, Dottie
Russell and myself) headed up there. Duane wasn't kidding: we saw a whopping
179 Whimbrels. Other birds of note along the west shore of Nee Noshe (accessed
off US287 a mile or so north of the road that goes into the Locust Grove) were:
Marbled Godwit (4), Willet (2), Long-billed Curlew (2), Forster's Tern (8),
Northern Pintail (pair, late), Bonaparte's Gull (1 in basic), various common
peep in small numbers, other common waterfowl.
At Tempel Grove (Kiowa CR35 at the Fort Lyon Ditch) we had:
HOODED WARBLER (beautiful male about 70 paces east of the CR35 Birding Trail
Sign along the ditch road (the bird was scoring big flies in calm air 5 feet
south of the ditch road down in the branch and leaf litter.)
Virginia's Warbler (1 male) same general area as the Hooded but up in tall
cottonwoods just leafing out
Hermit Thrush (at least 4) same general area as the Hooded, further south of
the ditch road under junipers mostly
Grosbeak? (pretty sure I heard a squeek and then part of the song, probably
Black-headed)
[REMINDER: it is OK to walk along the ditch road on either side of CR35 at
Tempel's Grove. It is NOT OK to walk around in their yard, among their farm
implements, and fields as has happened of late according to the Tempel's and
their workers. Please respect the rights of these nice folks who fought hard
to save the trees that constitute this wonderful oasis habitat. They didn't
save the trees in order to have their yard tromped and privacy violated.
Thanks.]
