Usually one would not think that Brown Thrasher, MacGillivray's Warbler and
Green-tailed Towhee had much in common but yesterday I saw all three in my
yard in Canon City within a 10 minute period. I first spotted the Brown
Thrasher on the ground between my feeders and the water tray I put out. A
few minutes later I saw the MacGillivray's Warbler in a shrub near my
feeders. Then the Green-tailed Towhee arrived, also in the same area. All
three hung around for 45 min to an hour; and they are all new to my yard.
The MacGillivray's continued flitting around shrubs and trees presumably
feeding on the insects it found. The Brown Thrasher would hide then dash
quickly between hiding places. The Green-tailed Towhee came out in the open
to bath--actually it had 3 baths. Since it came out in the open I did get
photos of it at the water tray and have uploaded these to my Birds And
Nature <http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com>

This is the first Brown Thrasher I have seen in not only Canon City but in
Fremont County--they are rare here. I see MacGillivray's migrating through
on the Canon City Riverwalk and had seen several there yesterday morning. I
had also seen a Green-tailed Towhee on the Canon City Riverwalk that
morning. I do live only about 350 feet from the bluff edge of the Canon
City Riverwalk but I am in a residential area and they would have gone
through (or over) several other residences to get to my yard so I cannot
fathom this triple crown of unusual visitors. Certainly with the continuing
severe drought, the water I provide may be a draw (and clearly was for the
the Green-tailed Towhee). Maybe the other two also visited the water tray
before I spotted them. I do try to keep my yard as a habitat for birds,
bees and butterflies including thick shrubs for skulkers (which is why I
have Gray Catbirds every year)--since all three of these are
secretive/skulkers that would also be a draw. But all of that is available
on the Riverwalk also and certainly more habitat as well as water. It was
certainly fun to have these visitors.
