COBirders, On my way home (the long way home) from Denver this morning, 5/24/11, I birded around Prewitt and the Akron golf course. At one of the ponds along highway 6 before reaching Prewitt from the southwest there were: Least, Semipalmated, White-rumped and Stilt Sandpipers. Then on the south entrance road into Prewitt there was a GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER working the fence-line. After parking somewhat near the canal the first bird out of the car was a female SUMMER TANAGER. Unfortunately, I did not have the proper footwear so I spent more time watching where I was stepping than watching for birds but there was a female or young male AMERICAN REDSTART and a singing OVENBIRD in the woods. Also, there was an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER and at least 2 VEERIES. Near the northwest entrance at the parking lot near the "house" there were two PURPLE MARTINs. I only saw the female bird well as it flew low over the trees around the house with a Barn Swallow right near it for nice size comparison. The male, which I did not see well enough to age, just barely cleared the trees and then disappeared and the female followed. Next I went to Akron golf course. This was a great stop and unfortunately my last stop as I then got rained out. Almost all birds were at the northwest end of the west pond (no water in the east pond). Here is the list of goodies: 1 Black-crowned Night-Heron 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler (m) 3 Magnolia Warblers (all males, possibly only 2 birds as there were 2 at the far west end which I saw neither when I returned to that location before leaving and then saw one right at the exit as it flew in front of me into the grass then off to a small tree. This is not a short distance but could have been one of the first two.) 4 American Redstarts (adult male, 1st yr male, female and an unknown, only saw the tail end of the bird and was distracted by one of the Magnolias) 1 Ovenbird 1 Wilson's Warbler 30+ Clay-colored Sparrows 1 Lincoln's Sparrow
About 10 miles south of Akron the rain started and did not stop until about Calhan. There were lakes in fields along highway 71 that were not there yesterday and most of the ravines were full of fast running water. There was a lot of rain out there today! ----- Mark Peterson Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
