Thanks to Glenn for finding and being careful about the ID. It is just
as easy for a birder to identify a birds as a more common species and
therefore not arrive at the correct id as the reverse. One item field
mark that Glenn did not mention that was observed by all of us present
and is visible in Glenn's photos is the gape color. It is pink which
is characteristic of Western Gull and none of the other large black-
backed gulls except for Kelp which is excluded by mantle color,
orbital ring, iris color, and leg color. It is shared with several
ligh-mantled gulls.
