June 2011 Field Trips

Saturday, June 11       Red Rocks Park
Leader: Tom Bush    
Meet the leader at Red Rocks Trading Post at 7:30 am for a half day of 
foothills birding. Beautiful birds and beautiful scenery! Possible prairie 
falcons, white-throated swifts, warblers and many other foothills species.   
Bring lunch, water, and scopes, if desired. This will be a half day trip.   We‘
ll end up watching the Trading Post feeders over lunch.


Sunday, June 12       Belmar Park, Kountze Lake
(*This is a fully wheelchair accessible trip with pacing to match!)
Leaders: Chris Blakeslee, 303-694-4670 and Sue Schulman
Meet leaders at 0700 am in parking lot on the east side of Kountze Lake in 
Belmar Park behind the Iron Gate building.   This site is near the Belmar 
Shopping Center at 800 South Wadsworth Blvd. in Lakewood; turn west at light 
on West Ohio Avenue.   Drive a short two blocks to the parking lot.   We will 
be on paved trails and wooden decking and will bird around the lake and 
through the cattail marshes.   Ducks, geese, swallows, night-heron, and 
warblers; bring snacks and water for this easy going half day of early summer 
birding.

June Field Trips, continued
Saturday, June 18       Lair O’ The Bear
Leader: Niña Routh, 303-987-8687
Looking to find some of the new birds in their nurseries.   Expecting 
warblers, accipiters, and the usual (and maybe some unusual!) foothills birds.  
 
40+ species possible.   This is a half day trip.   Bring snacks and water.   
Meet leader at 8:00 am at Lair O‘ the Bear Park – from Morrison, drive 4 
miles west on C-74 to park entrance on left.     (Observe speed limits!)

of participants.


Sunday, June 19        Golden Gate Canyon State Park
Leaders: Ira and Tammy Sanders    
We‘ll be birding varied habitats (meadows, aspen groves, pine covered 
hills) between 7400‘ and 10,400‘.   Expecting numerous mountain and foothills 
species.  Meet leaders at 7:00 am at the Subway on the north side of Golden, 
106 Rubey Dr #A.   From intersection of US 6 and Hwy. 93, go north approx. 
6/10 mile to first light at Iowa St. Turn east (rt.) on Iowa.   Go 1 block 
east and turn north (left) on Rubey Drive.   Subway is just north of the 
Loaf-N-Jug.   We will be carpooling from the Subway.   Plan on birding into the 
afternoon.   Bring lunch and State Parks pass if you have one.


Saturday, June 25      Rigli Ranch
Leader: Joe Rigli, 970-768-7121
Full day trip. A treat to bird at this private ranch.   Led by owner who 
has birded here since childhood.   Prairie, riparian, and woodlands habitats.  
 Possible long-billed curlew, oriole sp., burrowing owls, raptors, and 
prairie wildflowers.   We will meet leader at ranch at 9:00 am. From Hudson, go 
east on CO 52 until it turns north.   Don't turn north, but continue east on 
Morgan County road F to CR 14, then turn north for approximately one mile 
to first house on left by boxcars.   Bring lunch and extra water.   Wear long 
pants.


Sunday, June 26         Alfred M. Bailey Bird Nesting Area
Leader: Toni Rautus, 303-422-7322    
A unique birding spot located in the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area at 9500‘ 
elevation. Many different habitats here so we will have a diversity and 
abundance of nesting birds. Meet leader at 7:00 am at the Wendy‘s just north of 
Hwy. 9 at the Silverthorne exit of I-70. Take exit 205 off I-70 and you will 
see the Wendy‘s immediately on the right.   Bring lunch and water.   We will 
be birding into the afternoon.   If questions please call the leader.
