I haven’t posted for awhile, so thought I’d share the birds I’ve had in my yard the past four weeks or so. I have not seen the birds in the list following the Collared-Doves in several weeks now…but were all here in May.
I have been wondering which bird makes a sort of ‘rattling’ sound and what could be the other one that makes a call like the cross between a gulp and a coo. I thought that one could be a night-jar (I used to see them all the time at 8000’ must 11 miles from here). I had no idea of the other; perhaps an Owl or maybe a big Corvid? Then, my friend Margie Joy mentioned another friend of ours, Polly Wren Neldner, had heard a Yellow-billed Cuckoo quite close to my home. Polly Wren has photos of the one in her yard; but I had no idea what they even sound like. With news like Margie gave me, I made a point to listen to recordings…and THAT is the bird which makes BOTH the rattling sound and the gulping-coo! Thanks to Rick Peterson and the guys on the ‘Big Day’ last week; they saw the Peregrine Falcon, Rick called and I saw it over my yard! Too cool… Unfortunately, the White-winged Dove they'd hoped to see didn’t make an appearance till a couple days later. Yellow-billed Cuckoo, White-winged Dove, Peregrine Falcon, Orange- crowned Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Mourning Dove, Western Tanager, Broad- tailed Hummingbird, Bullock's Oriole, Black-chinned Hummer, Lesser Goldfinch, Brown-headed Cowbird, Turkey Vulture, Spotted Towhee, American Robin, Common Grackle, Song Sparrow, Hairy Woodpecker, White- crowned Sparrow, Cassin's Finch, White-breasted Nuthatch, European Starling, American Crow, Downy Woodpecker, Red-winged Blackbird, American Goldfinch, Blue Jay, Mountain Chickadee, Evening Grosbeak, Pine Siskin, Black-capped Chickadee, Northern Flicker: Red-shafted, Black-billed Magpie, House Finch, House Sparrow, Eurasian Collared- Dove, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Indigo Bunting, Brown-capped Rosy- Finch, Lazuli Bunting, Great Blue Heron, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Belted Kingfisher, Black-headed Grosbeak, Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Oh, I walked out early one morning and scared up the Great Blue Heron from a tree at the back of my yard! That one was NOT a fly-over. Awesome.
