Announcement: new Canon City field trip this Sunday 6/19/11
I am offering to lead a field trip to see the Black-throated Sparrows this
Sunday, June 19 near Canon City. I have seen them everyday and found
another pair further west of the original location so believe there are at
least 2 pair and likely more at this area where I believe they are nesting.
I enjoy listening to their 'tinkling' calls and hope they will still be
singing their pretty song also. The little canyon where they are located
also has a number of other singing birds including Blue-gray Gnatcatchers,
Western Scrub-Jay, Northern Mockingbirds, Spotted Towhee, Black-headed
Grosbeak, Plumbeous Vireo, Cassin's Kingbirds, Ash-throated Flycatchers,
Canyon Wrens and lots of Rock Wrens. Some of these have fledglings about
and I found a family of Rock Wren nestlings inside a hole in the side of the
bank of a nearby gulch. Lots of flowering cactus including beautiful red
blooms on barrel cactus.

I have at least 1 male Dickcissel singing in another nearby location but
cannot guarantee it will still be around by Sunday as I found the farmer
mowing the hay field they are in yesterday. I will keep watch (it was
singing still today) and if they might around we will try for them. There
is a phoebe (she appears to be an Eastern Phoebe that bred with a Black
Phoebe) raising nestlings on across from the Canon City Riverwalk that we
can go look for if anyone is interested. We will walk on gravel roads and
dirt paths, all generally level but not smooth The field trip will be a half
day and over by 1 pm.

Meet: June 19 at 8 am (over by 1-pm but can leave whenever)
Location: Kwik Stop on the corner of H50 and Dozier Ave (near Walmart on
east end of Canon City)
Bring: snacks to eat in car as we will not stop for a designated lunch
break; binoculars, hat, sturdy shoes, spotting scope if you have one, water,
and a sense of adventure
