As reported by Susan Craig, on 26 August David Woolley found a juvenile Mississippi Kite in Fountain, CO, on the corner of Race and Ohio. Although adult Mississippi's have been seen in the Fountain area for more than five years during the summer months, I believe this is the first time that a juvenile (photos) has been documented here during the summer. Nesting begins sometime from late May to late June, incubation (1 or 2 eggs) is about 30 days, nestlings remain in the nest for about 25 days, followed by a period of 15-20 days post-fledging when both adults feed fledged bird(s) not far from where they were born, the juvenile(s) being quite vocal (Birds of North America online).
I checked this area today and heard a fledgling Mississippi Kite calling loudly at the top of an elm with dead limbs around noon at the corner of Race and Missouri or one block farther south than reported two days ago. Also, an adult kite was seen soaring over downtown Fountain. Bill Maynard Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
