The Red-headed Woodpeckers did indeed nest in a Pondo snag on that hogback this year. There was also successful nesting at Heil Ranch, and I have seen RHWO at other potential breeding sights at two other spots around Boulder this summer, plus a couple migrants. There have been many reports of this species from around CO this summer, a promising up-swing.

At first I was skeptical, so I confirmed with him that they are Red-head^ed^ woodpeckers, and he said yes. So I took his word for it and pay extra attention to any woodpeckers. Sure enough no more than 10 minutes later I saw a juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker. I waited for a quite a while but did not see any adults. Back home I checked the cobirds archive and see that Christian Nunes reported seeing one there back in June, but the report did not say if it was an adult. Interestingly this was the second bird I saw today that has a white band from secondaries to secondaries, through the rump. Earlier I saw a bird in Superior while driving that fit the description and the bird gave me the impression of the shape of a Myna, which I saw quite a few in July when I was in SE Asia. The bird is dark in color, has the white band that I described, though the band is more narrow than that of the RHWO, the wings are wide, like in Mynas, and the size is that of a blue jay. In any case I am pretty sure it is not a native bird, unless I am missing something. So just be warned if you are driving along Rock Creek in Superior.
