Folks,

Norm Erthal, Loch Kilpatrick, Joe Roller and I birded select, NE Colorado
hotspots. Starting at Prewitt along the inlet canal (thanks again Tina), we
had a mixed flock that included several Cassin's Vireos, Plumbeous Vireos,
Warbling Vireos, Wilson's Warblers, Townsend's Warblers and American Redstarts.
A calling Great Crested Flycatcher was observed briefly by Loch. Joe pulled a
Common Tern from a pile of Franklin's Gulls and a few Forster's Terns. Below
the dam was slow until Norm spotted a hummingbird. An adult, male
Ruby-throated Hummingbird! This splendid beauty was seen feeding on the few
flowering plants west of the Locust grove near the NE entrance. After we
dipped on photos, we headed to Akron where we saw an Eastern Phoebe and a Field
Sparrow. We then birded Last Chance, following the reports of amazing things
there. We had a very cooperative Chestnut-sided Warbler along with a very
uncooperative catharus thrush. Another batch of 2011 fall, American Redstarts
completed the list of birds at this location for us. Our last stop at a
private Lincoln County ranch produced few birds. But as we were leaving, Loch
discovered a newly emerged, Regal Fritilary! You won't find this in your
Sibley's Guide to Birds, but it was sweet none the less!
