COBirders,

Today was the Pueblo County fall count and I volunteered to cover the Pueblo
County portion of Chico Basin Ranch (fee area). In the middle of a wet sedge
meadow to the south and just east of (below) the west cattail marsh at Upper
Twin Pond, I photographed what I believe is a juvenile LeConte's Sparrow. I
am not familiar with juvenile Ammodramus sparrows but the bird has a dull
orangish face with a gray check spot and a whitish central crown stripe
surrounded by wider black crown stripes. The back is brightly patterned and
the nape is dull orangish. If the bird remains overnight I believe it can
be found again (rubber boots desirable) tomorrow.

Chico is still attracting lots of migrants, today mostly common species but
lots of sparrows, Empidonax flycatchers, and bushels of Wilson's Warblers.
Mourning Dove and teal hunting is an ongoing activity there but with very
few participants today. The banding station is closed on Sundays.
