My husband and I set out to camp at Morraine Park in RMNP today and
decided to check out the Prothonotary action at Estes Lake as
mentioned yesterday ( and today ). The rain started just as we got
out of the car at 1pm, but lifted enough for us to walk around the
western end and get some nice close-ups of a flock of at least a dozen
Wilson's Warblers, a few Orange Crowned and several Yellow Rumps
( Audubon ) and Mountain Chickadees,and a single Lincoln's Sparrow all
in a loose group in the shrubs along the golf course. Also around the
west-side lake area : a Belted Kingfisher, a flock of about 15 Cedar
Waxwings overhead; Barn Swallows, a Peregrine Falcon, a Red-Tailed
Hawk, a Turkey Vulture and 3 Red-Shafted Flickers. The big surprise
was a Hummingbird ( sp unknown ) harassing an unidentifiable peep over
the lake until the poor peep dropped onto the water to try and
escape ! The hummer kept at it until the peep flew back up, hit the
beach and ran into the grasses !
The rain drove us back to the car and we called off the camping
trip....the temperature had dropped down to the upper 40's, with more
rain on the way. Oh, and we didnt get the Prothonotary Warbler !
